This is a Celluloid painted Netsuke, carved in Japan in the 19th Century, to depict a Noh Dancer perforning the Lion Dance. The material used to make this netsuke is fully described by Norman Sandfield, a well-known netsuke collector and author, who has done a lot of research on this material, and who owns the largest collection of early plastic Japanese netsuke. Norman published an article about celluloid in Andon, #59 (July 1998). This article was referenced and copied on a thread regarding authentic antique plastic Japanese netsuke at the International Netsuke Society Forum. Netsuke is unsigned. It measures 1.40 inches (3.6cm) wide, and 1.62 inches (4.1cm) tall.
