This is a LARGE, very seldom seen, Buddhist Temple Ceremonial (Taiko) Drum with Stand. Taiko means that the drum is beaten with a mallet or drumstick. According to Japanese history: the first use of taiko was as a battlefield instrument; used to intimidate and scare the enemy --a use to which drums have been put in many cultures. In addition to the martial aspect, taiko has been used in the most refined cultural settings as well. Taiko were definitely used in the opening celebrations of the Todaiji Buddhist Temple in the sixth century and quickly incorporated into the Imperial court music. Certain taiko have gone on to become some of the most elegant and beautiful of all Japanese instruments. Taiko has continued to find a place in religious ceremonies, both Buddhist and Shinto. Some Buddhist sects use taiko to represent the voice of Buddha, and Bon dancing in summer is centered on Buddhist rites. It was used in village Shinto rites to offer up prayers to the Gods. In addition, the village festivals were celebrated with the sound of drumming. These festivals developed a rich body of traditional taiko rhythms, now a never-ending source of inspiration to modern players. The make a (Taiko) Drum, a skin a mounted on either side of a cylindrical trunk or wooden bucket. It is made to vibrate or emit sound The sound is fine tuned according to the diameter of the mounted skin and the length of the trunk. This (Taiko) drum is exactly as depicted by 鳴物 Narashimono, Percussion Instruments at Buddhist Temples. A graphic of this 18th/19th century document is shown in photo #11 and #12. The stand is inscribed on the right and left upright poles, and is dated Showa 38 (1964). Additionally, the drum is inscribed on its left side with an offering or a poem made by the family or group who donated the instrument to the temple. This Taiko Drum comes with a "no bo" or mallet that is original to the Drum, and with a traditional stand (photo #12) that has the following measurements: Tall: 41 inches Wide: 40 inches Weight: 28 lbs The Drum is 19 inches in Diameter and 8.5 inches in Depth.
